Mealime is a free meal-planning app that builds a weekly menu from your preferences, then produces a grocery list sorted by category. It earned its reputation by being quick and uncluttered. The verdict, and the key fact for anyone reading this now: Mealime's own website says it will shut down on October 21, 2026, and that Albertsons Companies is folding its features into a free tool called Meals Hub. So this review explains what Mealime did well, what you should do before the shutdown, and what to use afterward.

We reviewed Mealime through its own website and closing notice, and we cannot promise any feature will still work by the time you read this. Mealime is not nutrition or medical advice. If you manage diabetes, kidney disease, an eating disorder, food allergies or pregnancy, a doctor or registered dietitian should guide your meal plan, not an app.

The Shutdown, in Plain Terms

Mealime's homepage shows a banner reading "Mealime will shut down on October 21, 2026," and its closing page says Albertsons Companies, which acquired Mealime in 2021, is consolidating its recipe and meal-planning features into Meals Hub, available through Albertsons Companies grocery apps and websites. According to that page, Pro subscriptions are being wound down, Pro subscribers will not be charged additional fees before the shutdown, and all Pro recipes and features become available to every Mealime user. The page says personal data will be deleted when the app shuts down, and it did not mention a data export. We could not find independent news coverage of the closure, so the company's page is our only source. Verify on Mealime's site.

How We Evaluated Mealime

We read Mealime's current public pages and the closing notice and compared the approach with other meal-planning tools in our best meal planning apps guide. Because the service is being retired, we are not recommending you start a new routine on it, and we did not run a multi-week test for this review. Features below come from the company's own descriptions, not from independent measurement.

What Mealime Offered

The company's site described planning a week of meals in minutes, with plan types such as Classic and Vegetarian and serving sizes such as for 2 or for 4. It cited more than 200 personalization options, including allergies such as shellfish or gluten and dislikes such as olives, and said the grocery list is built from your plan and auto-sorted into categories. Recipes were described as taking about 30 minutes, with a hands-free cooking mode, and the site cited more than 4.5 million users.

The appeal is that it removed decisions. You chose a plan, adjusted for dislikes and received a shopping list, which fits the advice in our guides to meal prep for beginners and healthy eating on a busy schedule.

What to Do Before October 21

If you use Mealime, the closing page tells you three things worth acting on. First, personal data will be deleted at shutdown, and the page did not mention an export, so copy any recipes, lists or notes you want to keep by hand. Second, if you want your data removed sooner, the page points to the privacy rights described in its Privacy Policy. Third, the page says some preferences will need to be set up again in Meals Hub, with dietary preferences managed in your Meals Hub profile. Screenshot your allergy and dislike settings first, and double-check allergen filters in any new tool rather than assuming they carried over.

What Made It Useful While It Lasted

Mealime stood out by being narrow. It did not try to count every nutrient or sell a coaching plan. It gave you a short list of recipes, scaled the quantities to your household size and handed you a list you could take to the store. That design suits cooks who feel overwhelmed by choice and want an answer to what is for dinner, and it is the standard to hold any replacement to.

It also had limits worth naming. A recipe app does not check portion sizes against your needs, and a plan labeled vegetarian is not a medical diet. When you pick a replacement, judge it on how few steps it takes from opening the app to a finished grocery list, how clearly it handles allergy filters, and whether it lets you save or export your favorite recipes.

Questions to Ask Any Replacement

Before you move your routine, check three things. Can you export or copy your saved recipes? Does the privacy policy explain what happens to your data if the service closes? And is the pricing clear, or does a free tier quietly end after a trial? Mealime's closure shows why the last two matter. Verify current pricing and terms on the replacement's own site, not only in a review.

Where Meal Planning Apps Fall Short

Any planner works from generic nutrition ideas. It does not know your lab results, medications or medical history, and a vegetarian or low-carb label is not a clinical diet. Planners can also push you toward ingredients that are not sold at your store. Prices at the register vary, and a free app does not guarantee a cheaper grocery bill, which our grocery budget guide explains. When you rely on an ingredient label for allergens, read the actual package, as in our guide to reading nutrition labels.

The bottom line: Mealime was a fast, free planner, but with its shutdown set for October 21, 2026, do not start using it now; back up anything you want to keep and move to Meals Hub or another planner from our best meal planning apps guide.
